Archil Gorduladze: Relations with the United States should be based on equal footing, a relationship between equals, and consideration of our interests

The Chairman of the Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee, Archil Gorduladze, stated that moving relations with the United States to a qualitatively new level is one of his team's priorities, and that those relations should be based on equality, mutual respect, and consideration of Georgia's interests.

According to him, the United States also has its own interests, and the further development of bilateral relations and the establishment of a genuine strategic partnership depend on the alignment of those interests.

Gorduladze also said that the statement issued by the U.S. Embassy once again confirmed that the current U.S. administration would not approve of, and would strongly criticize, what he described as the anti-democratic actions of the "collective National Movement."

"Moving relations with the United States to a qualitatively new level is one of our team's priorities. It should be based on equal footing, a relationship between equals, and consideration of our interests. Of course, the United States has its own interests as well, and the alignment of those interests will ultimately determine the deepening of our relations and, most importantly, the establishment of a genuine strategic partnership.

As for the statement, it once again confirmed that the current U.S. administration, for which democratic principles are paramount, would in no way approve of and would strongly criticize the anti-democratic actions being carried out by the 'collective National Movement.' These include disregarding the will of the Georgian people and their supporters, as well as refusing to exercise parliamentary mandates, which is even a political obligation. Once again, it has been confirmed that the current administration of the United States and its representatives cannot possibly endorse steps taken by the 'collective National Movement' against democracy," Gorduladze said.

For reference, yesterday the United States Embassy in Georgia released information regarding statements made following meetings held during the visit of a U.S. State Department delegation to Georgia from May 25–28 with representatives of the Georgian government and opposition party leaders.

According to the embassy's statement, delegation members noted after meeting with the Georgian government that they had conveyed the Trump administration's readiness to pursue a constructive, future-oriented relationship with Georgia.

The statement further noted that the United States looks forward to working with the Georgian government on a partnership that will bring tangible benefits to both countries and fully realize the potential of bilateral relations.

Regarding the delegation's meeting with opposition party leaders, the delegation stated that political stability and genuine opposition representation are among the factors that make Georgia a reliable partner for American investment, security cooperation, and a long-term strategic partnership.
