Irakli Kobakhidze - We are glad that specific prisoners accepted our proposal, it would be good if others also follow - we can promise: in case of appeal, confession, and remorse, the government will respond accordingly

It would be very good if other prisoners would follow these people, including in terms of confession, in terms of appealing to the President of Georgia for pardon. We can, in agreement with the President, once again promise that in the event of a corresponding appeal, confession, repentance, the government will respond accordingly, - Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists when he spoke about the conclusion of a plea agreement with several persons detained during the October 4 rally.

As Kobakhidze noted, if there is a confession, of course, the government will respond accordingly and they can promise this once again.

"We made a very clear statement regarding pardons and generally regarding the approaches towards prisoners. We stated that if there is remorse for the crime, if there is an appropriate appeal, we are ready to have an appropriate response to all of this and we are glad that this proposal of ours was duly accepted by specific prisoners. Accordingly, they confessed to the crime committed and accordingly, a plea bargain was signed with them. It would be very good if other prisoners follow these people, including in terms of confession, in terms of appealing to the President of Georgia for pardon. We can, in agreement with the President, once again give a promise that in the event of an appropriate appeal, confession, remorse, the government will have an appropriate response. This is important for the prevention of crime.

Do you remember that in 2023 there was systemic violence, an attack on state institutions, then only one person was arrested, and he was pardoned by the former president. Then six people were arrested and this had no effect of a preventive measure, on the contrary, it incited new violence. In order for new violence not to be incited, it is important that justice be enforced, however, once again, if there is a confession, of course, we will have an appropriate response and we can make a promise about this once again,” said Irakli Kobakhidze.

He also answered a question about the attack on TV Pirveli journalist Maka Chikhladze and her cameraman Giorgi Shetsiruli during a protest rally in December 2024.

“In this regard, you know that the Vice Prime Minister made a statement and naturally, the investigation will be interested in this issue to the end and, as in the previous case, individuals were identified, we hope that in this case too, individuals will be identified. It is a process and you will learn everything at the appropriate time,” said Kobakhidze.
