Kakha Kaladze: Georgians include some of the world’s best footballers, fighters, artists, singers, designers, and writers, stressing that it is unacceptable to speak to Georgians in a condescending manner or “with a wagging finger"

Kakha Kaladze, Mayor of Tbilisi, says that dialogue with international partners should continue, but only in a constructive format, adding that speaking to Georgians “with a wagging finger” is unacceptable.

He made the remarks in response to reports that the European Union is planning a dialogue with Georgia on visa-related issues on June 11.

Kaladze said Georgia remains open to dialogue, friendship, and cooperation, but stressed that the country’s dignity must be respected.

“We welcome dialogue. However, we are a nation of fewer than four million people. Georgians include the world’s best football player, fighters, creators, singers, designers, and writers. Throughout history, we have left our mark. This shows there is something special about our nation. I am not saying we are better or worse than others, but that we are different in character. Unfortunately, not everyone has understood that speaking to Georgians with a wagging finger and looking down on them is unacceptable.”

He added that Georgia’s policies are guided by national interests and that the country is not acting against either the United States or Europe.

Kaladze also said that criticism and recommendations must be based on arguments rather than pressure:

“When there is criticism from the EU regarding certain legislation, questions arise as to whether there is a double standard. We see that some EU countries are also considering similar laws. If it is acceptable for them, why is it not acceptable for us?”

According to reports cited by journalist Rikard Jozwiak, the EU is expected to hold a key meeting with Georgia on June 11 to discuss visa liberalisation issues, including the possibility of suspension measures.
