Gia Volski: It is a simplistic assessment to say that Armenia is striving toward the EU while Georgia is not - the EU simply has a different approach toward Armenia and Georgia

“It is a simplistic assessment to claim that Armenia is striving toward the European Union while Georgia is not. Both countries have a similar aspiration toward the EU in all directions. However, Brussels has certain interests that, in many cases, do not align with Georgia’s strategic interests,” First Vice Speaker of Parliament Gia Volski told journalists.

According to Volski, the European Union has different approaches toward Armenia and Georgia.

He argued that in some cases the EU’s attitude toward Georgia is quite negative and that “when it comes to foreign policy, Georgia is envisioned as cannon fodder.”

“It is a simplistic assessment to say that Armenia is striving toward the European Union and Georgia is not. The reality is that the European Union has a different approach toward Armenia and Georgia. In a number of key issues, the EU’s attitude toward Georgia is rather negative. If we look at the demands being made, we see that Georgia is envisioned as cannon fodder when discussions concern foreign policy issues, for example confrontation with Russia, whether economic or military.

The only real difference in our policy lies in how the European Union approaches Georgia. This has become much clearer in recent times. Armenia and Georgia have a similar aspiration toward the European Union. Georgia has significantly more positive indicators and demonstrates a higher level of compliance with European standards than Armenia or any candidate country.

We wish Armenia success. We are ready to share all of our experience with them, although ‘ready’ may not be the right word, because we are in constant communication. Our aspiration toward the European Union is similar in every direction. However, Brussels
