We expect the meeting to be constructive, because this is in our interest. That is why the Georgian side is participating in the meeting, to constructively discuss ways to eliminate the preconditions that were used by the European Union to activate the mechanism for suspending visa-free travel to Georgia. Let's wait for June 11, - Georgian Foreign Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Maka Bochorishvili told journalists.
According to Maka Bochorishvili, the meeting scheduled for June 11 is provided for by EU regulations.
"This is a meeting provided for by the regulation. In the event that the EU decision to suspend visa liberalization is implemented, the European side is obliged to initiate such a dialogue with a third country, in this case Georgia, and discuss how to continue relations in this direction. This is the first meeting, which will be held on June 11," Maka Bochorishvili said.
According to her, the disclosure of this information by the European side was followed by misinterpretations and attempts to use the issue for political blackmail.
“Unfortunately, this information was voiced in a strange way by the EU itself, by the European side, which resulted in incorrect interpretations and communications. We have seen statements by various politicians and activists who are trying to use the visa liberalization issue again and again for blackmail, to instill fear in our citizens, as if visa liberalization is a threat to Georgian citizens, and in a way, this is how they “christened” this meeting,” Maka Bochorishvili noted.
According to her, the meeting, which is envisaged by the EU regulation, will be held at the working level and the Georgian side expects it to be constructive. At the same time, the Minister emphasized that speculation on this topic significantly harms Georgia-EU relations.
“The meeting is technical, it will be held at the working level. This is what the EU regulation envisages. We expect the meeting to be constructive, because this is in our interest. That is why the Georgian side is participating in the meeting to constructively discuss ways to eliminate the preconditions that were used by the EU to activate the mechanism for suspending visa-free travel to Georgia. Let's wait for June 11. We will have the opportunity to say more after the meeting itself. Until then, it would simply be good if politicians and other actors refrained from speculating on this topic, which significantly damages relations between Georgia and the EU," the Minister of Foreign Affairs said.
In addition, Maka Bochorishvili spoke about the European Parliament report.
“We have seen a number of resolutions. Now the European Parliament is also considering another report on Georgia. We had the opportunity to follow the process of how the work on this report was going on in the European Parliament. It is unfortunate that not a single amendment aimed at improving the document, bringing it closer to the truth, was taken into account, which once again confirms that this is a process that is used by certain forces solely to create some kind of agenda in Georgia, which is less successful, but damages the image of the European Union, first of all, and the face of the European Union as much as possible. There is so much incorrect information written in these resolutions, so much disinformation that it is simply impossible to take them seriously,” said Maka Bochorishvili.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disseminated the above information.
