The EU Delegation to Georgia has released information on the “in-depth dialogue” between the EU and Georgia on visa issues.
Specifically, as the EU Delegation explains, the EU and Georgia are meeting today to hold an in-depth dialogue on visa issues, which will result in the activation of the visa suspension mechanism for holders of diplomatic, service and official passports of Georgia.
“On 11 June, European Commission representatives will meet with the Georgian delegation for an in-depth dialogue on visas. This is a standard process set out in the EU Visa Regulation, which applies in the event of the activation of the visa suspension mechanism.
This process follows the decision taken in March 2026, according to which visa-free travel for holders of diplomatic, service and official passports of Georgia was initially suspended for 12 months, subject to the agreement of the Member States.
The aim of the meeting is to resolve the circumstances that led to the suspension.
As a reminder, the basis for the activation of the visa suspension mechanism was the violation of Georgia’s commitments in the areas of democracy and fundamental rights under the visa-free regime,” reads the statement.
