Marketa Gregorova on Georgia - There will be calls for targeted sanctions, since Hungary has changed the government, we hope no one will block it like Orban

There will be a call for targeted sanctions, we hope that no one will block it like Orbán, - MEP Marketa Gregorova told InterpressNews when speaking about the European Parliament's report on Georgia.

According to the MEP, the report is "very critical of the democratic backsliding in Georgia."

The MEP spoke about the EU’s financial assistance to Georgia, saying that the annual report will help with the issue of stopping funding.

“The annual report, unlike resolutions, is very important in terms of how we as, the EU as a whole, approach Georgia. We are setting certain standards as the European Parliament, and many people do not know, but apart from sanctions and other things that can be done now, there is still some open funding at certain levels. It is not necessarily towards the government, it can be local, local reforms and so on, but it is still money that goes to the Georgian government from the EU.

This report, if it is negative – and I tell you it will be negative – will help us stop this funding. So, in terms of funding and potentially with sanctions, this has an impact on the Georgian government,” the MEP said.

Gregorova suggested that Georgian Dream is financially supported by Russian connections.

“Of course, it [the Georgian government] is very likely financially supported in part by their connections in Russia - by Rosatom and the like. So as long as they have this pipeline, they are not dependent on the EU, but Georgian citizens should know that this pipeline exists,” Gregorova said.
