Shalva Papuashvili: They have deviated from all common sense and the logic of visa mobility. They have invented regulations specifically for Georgia, which are applied only to Georgia

“They have deviated from all common sense and the logic of visa mobility. They have invented regulations specifically for Georgia, which are applied only to Georgia,” said Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili while commenting on yesterday’s EU–Georgia visa dialogue meeting.

According to Papuashvili, he expects that in the end Brussels will not take steps that would harm itself.

“What we heard was that discussions were held at the level of technical groups on technical issues. They often introduce political topics into the issue of visa-free travel, which in itself shows Brussels’ bad faith. I would like to remind everyone that Brussels violated international law when it imposed visa requirements on holders of diplomatic passports. It violated the 2010 international agreement between the European Union and Georgia. The EU is itself a violator of international law at the very moment it accuses others of violating it. Later, to cover up this violation, they adopted special regulations tailored to Georgia, deviating from all reasonableness and the logic of visa mobility. They have invented regulations specifically for Georgia, which are applied only to Georgia, where they can demand anything according to their own preference. Under the so-called ‘democratic development’ pretext, they can invent absolutely anything, tell us what laws to adopt or not adopt, whether to stand on the left foot or the right, and so on. This once again shows the deplorable situation into which Brussels has led the European Union, turning it into a violator of international law.

The Brussels bureaucracy is acting so unprofessionally that it gives us hope that in the end they will not take steps that would harm themselves. So far, everything they have done has only harmed themselves. They have damaged only the European Union and trust in it. If they now want to shoot themselves in the foot again, they are free to do so, but the EU’s approach toward Georgia is a mini-model of the incompetence that characterizes today’s Brussels bureaucracy,” Papuashvili said.
