Nikoloz Samkharadze: We asked Luxembourg to raise with the European Commission the issue of resuming dialogue with Georgia - we are ready to discuss critical issues, including the transparency law

“We asked the Luxembourg side to raise with the European Commission the issue of resuming dialogue with Georgia,” said the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, Nikoloz Samkharadze, in Luxembourg.

According to him, the Georgian side provided the Luxembourg side with comprehensive information about developments both in Georgia and in the region.

“Recently we concluded our meeting with the Chairpersons and members of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committees of the Luxembourg Parliament. We had a very interesting discussion on issues related to bilateral relations, the security situation in our region, Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration, Georgia’s integration into the European Union, and also economic progress.

Members of the Luxembourg Parliament had questions on these topics, and we provided them with comprehensive information about what is happening both in Georgia and in the region, what role Georgia plays in the South Caucasus peace process, what challenges Georgia faces due to Russian occupation, what the problems are in relations between Georgia and the EU, and we also asked the Luxembourg side to raise with the European Commission the issue of resuming dialogue with Georgia.

The meeting went quite interestingly. It generated significant interest, as many members attended. The Luxembourg Parliament is relatively small, and more than ten members were present, which clearly shows the level of interest in Georgia,” Samkharadze added.

He also spoke about a meeting held at the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs and noted that:

“We also had a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during our visit, and there we also asked the Luxembourg side to resume dialogue with Georgia. We are ready to resume dialogue in any format. We are also ready to discuss critical issues, including the law that was the formal reason for suspending dialogue between the EU and Georgia — I refer to the transparency law. The Luxembourg side responded quite constructively to our position, and we hope that when meetings are held among member states, they will support the resumption of dialogue with Georgia,” said Nikoloz Samkharadze.

According to him, the Speaker of Parliament will visit Luxembourg in the autumn.

As noted, during the visit to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, Nikoloz Samkharadze, and the Chair of the European Integration Committee, Levan Makhashvili, held an expanded-format meeting in the Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies. The hosts were Gusty Graas, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Marc Hansen, Chair of the Defense Committee.

They also held a meeting at the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Véronique Dockendorf, Director of the Political Affairs Directorate.
