Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that there had been accumulated problems related to crime, particularly organized crime.
“There were accumulated problems in terms of crime, especially organized crime. There was a practice where young people - or not only young people - in Tbilisi were running around with weapons. It was a very bad practice that required confrontation through radical measures,” Kobakhidze said during a plenary session of Parliament while presenting his annual performance report.
According to Kobakhidze, there were also serious issues in the area of drug-related crime.
He reported that over the past year:
15 “thieves-in-law” were brought to justice;
335 individuals connected to the criminal underworld were also prosecuted;
More than 8,000 people involved in drug-related crimes were held accountable.
Kobakhidze also highlighted decisions regarding psychotropic medicines and substitution therapy:
“A significant decision was also made regarding the import of psychotropic medications and substitution therapy. These areas had been entrusted to the private sector, and there were serious suspicions of harmful practices. We have fully brought these processes under state control, which ensures the elimination of problematic practices in both directions - both in the sale of psychotropic medicines and in substitution therapy,” he said.
