"It is personally unfortunate for me to watch what is happening. This is not a serious process, it is not a normal process, and it is not a process that can lead to any healthy outcome," said Grigol Gegelia, Foreign Secretary of the coalition "Strong Georgia – Lelo," regarding the confrontation within the "Opposition Alliance."
According to Gegelia, he is glad that "Lelo" is not part of this confrontation.
"Strong Georgia – Lelo has chosen the right path of development. It is a path oriented toward a positive agenda, substance, and a great deal of hard work. This path leaves us no time, desire, or interest to be engaged in any way with the internal squabbles of certain political groups.
We are not interested in what they will do or how they will do it — that is their business and their decision. Personally, it is unfortunate for me to watch what is happening. This is not a serious process, it is not a normal process, and it is not a process that can lead to any healthy outcome. But I am very pleased that 'Lelo' is not part of it and does not stoop to this kind of squabbling," Gegelia stated.
He also assessed the confrontation that occurred in Parliament and noted that the Prosecutor's Office must definitely investigate this incident and raise the issue of criminal liability for the "Georgian Dream" deputies.
"This shows that 'Georgian Dream' is a formation of criminal thugs and not a political party. At the same time, it shows that they have no sense of responsibility whatsoever. When a strongman who can lift 600 kilograms attacks a person who is being held back by others and throws a punch at him with such force, that is criminal. He emphasized all the achievements that this person had objectively accomplished in his profession for the country. Even if he now wins ten gold medals, he will remain just as much of a scoundrel as the scoundrel we saw in the plenary session hall, because manhood is not measured by gold. Manhood, humanity, and citizenship are measured by behavior. And this man we saw is simply a small, ugly man who threw a punch at a person being held by others and delivered a very powerful blow at a time when he has a duty to show restraint.
The issue of their [Georgian Dream deputies'] criminal liability must definitely be raised. Hasn't the Prosecutor's Office seen these videos? When it sees such footage, it is obliged to open a case. If we were a normal state, the relevant case should have been opened within about an hour," Gegelia said.
In addition, the opposition politician commented on the founding of a new political party by Viktor Khipiani, chairman of the organization "Geocase," and wished success to the new opposition force. When asked whether "Strong Georgia – Lelo" plans to form an alliance with Khipiani’s party, Gegelia replied that they share common visions and do not rule out cooperation in the future.
"I believe we have a great many shared values and will cooperate many times in the matter of peacefully ending Bidzina Ivanishvili’s regime. The future will show everything. The main thing is that healthy political energies exist in this country — energies that have very clear visions," Gegelia stated.
