Tazo Datunashvili: This is what the nightmare created by the "Dream" government in the education system looks like: more than half of teachers fail to meet the minimum passing threshold in examinations, and in reading comprehension we rank 67th out of 81 countries

The so-called education reform launched by the Georgian Dream government began with the introduction of mandatory school uniforms for students in grades 1-6, continued with changing the covers of school textbooks, and is now moving on to rewriting the history of Georgia.

According to Datunashvili, "What Georgian Dream is doing amounts to the complete collapse of Georgia's education system."

"Georgian Dream's so-called education reform began by introducing mandatory school uniforms for students in grades 1-6, continued by changing the covers of school textbooks, and is now proceeding with rewriting Georgia's history.

Georgian Dream has decided that school uniforms for Georgian students should be manufactured in China. Instead of encouraging local production, it is awarding a contract worth millions of dollars to a one-person Chinese company. This is despite the fact that Georgia has long been home to textile manufacturers that are among the best in Europe and produce clothing for brands such as Puma, Nike, Adidas, and Moncler. Sending this money to a Chinese company is simply an economic crime on the part of Georgian Dream.

Financial resources on this scale could have significantly developed Georgia's textile industry and created hundreds of additional jobs for Georgian citizens. More importantly, the cost of purchasing these mandatory uniforms will ultimately fall on students' families, who will have to buy them.

After 14 years of absurd reforms, the nightmare created by Georgian Dream in the education system looks like this:

1. According to the National Assessment and Examinations Center itself, 80% of physics teachers, 71% of chemistry teachers, and 60% of biology teachers fail to achieve the minimum passing score on teacher certification exams. In other words, more than half of teachers in these subjects do not meet even the minimum qualification standard.

2. According to PISA studies, Georgia ranks 67th out of 81 countries in reading comprehension, 60th in mathematics, and 66th in science.

In addition, 35% of schoolchildren never eat during the school day because they cannot afford to. More than 45% of children say they cannot afford at least one essential school item due to financial hardship. Around 45% of Georgian students study without a laptop, textbooks, art supplies, or other basic educational materials.

Between 2022 and 2025, 22,737 students dropped out of school because their families emigrated abroad. Georgian Dream remains silent and effectively tells everyone to leave the country. Dozens of schools remain in disrepair, while funds intended for their rehabilitation have been diverted to companies linked to Georgian Dream. Some of these companies are under criminal investigation, while others continue operating. For years, many students have been unable to attend their own schools throughout the academic year. Thousands of children are forced to travel long distances to schools far from their homes and neighborhoods, creating transportation needs that have also become part of corrupt schemes.

This is what secondary education looks like under Georgian Dream. Yet they have decided that the focus of reform should be what our children wear to school—even though 35% of them go hungry during the school day. Georgian Dream is concerned with their clothing, not with feeding them. They are changing the covers of school textbooks instead of improving what is actually written inside them. For Ivanishvili's regime, what appears on the cover is more important than the quality of the content.

This disgraceful reality will inevitably change. One of the gravest crimes Georgian Dream is committing against Georgia and its future is the complete destruction of the country's education system," Datunashvili said.
