Georgia's fifth president, Salome Zurabishvili, has commented on the verdict handed down against Aleko Elisashvili, one of the leaders of the Strong Georgia – Lelo coalition.
Writing on Facebook, Zurabishvili said that the 13-year prison sentence bears no relation to justice and asserted that those responsible for such rulings will eventually be held accountable.
"I do not know what kind of scenario they orchestrated around Elisashvili. The only thing I know is that this 13-year sentence has nothing to do with justice. Those who participate in handing down these verdicts, those who are disgracing the very words 'justice' and 'court' today—their time will come. Every one of them will regret their own cowardice. They are committing a grave sin. They know it, and they do it anyway," Zurabishvili wrote on Facebook.
For reference, politician Aleko Elisashvili, one of the leaders of the Strong Georgia – Lelo coalition, was found guilty by the court on charges of attempting to commit a terrorist act.
Under the ruling of Judge Giorgi Gelashvili, Elisashvili was sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment.
