Shalva Papuashvili - It is bad when the EU's top representative attacks the Georgian government again, out of the blue, however, where there is an attack, there will definitely be a response

It is bad when the EU's top representative attacks the Georgian government again, out of the blue, - writes the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.

As Papuashvili notes, where there is an attack, there will definitely be a response. According to him, it is unfortunate that some EU high-ranking officials still cannot tolerate the political practice of preferring to speak in a mentoring tone instead of an equal dialogue with the democratically elected government of a sovereign state.

“It is bad when the EU High Representative attacks the Georgian government again, out of the blue. Such rhetoric not only does not add anything to Georgian-EU relations, but also further damages the already shaken trust in Brussels in the eyes of Georgian society.

However, where there is an attack, there will certainly be a response.

The response is that, unfortunately, some EU high-ranking officials still cannot stand the political practice of preferring to speak in a mentoring tone instead of an equal dialogue with the democratically elected government of a sovereign state.

We need to understand what the formula means: “I support the people, but not their government.” In fact, such a statement implies that, in Ms. Kallas’s opinion, the Georgian people are incapable of choosing their own government and therefore need external guardianship and dictation. This is not support for the Georgian people, for their political choices. It is disrespectful.

Brussels should realize that such arrogant attitude towards other nations by some of their representatives is increasingly distancing the EU from the idea of a peace project and turning it into an instigator of conflicts.

Ms. Kallas’s statement today is even more thought-provoking considering that she, as one of the leaders of ALDE, represents the same political family of which Lelo is a member. A party that considers terrorism a legitimate weapon of political struggle. Therefore, until Ms. Kallas does not clearly distance herself from justifying terrorism by her political partners, any future comments she makes regarding Georgia will be frivolous,” Papuashvili wrote.

For information, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, stated that “we have no connections with the Georgian government and we do not want to support it - we want to support the Georgian people.”

According to her, the EU discussed how to act so that the Georgian people do not lose hope in Europe. In addition, as she noted, various countries located around the Black Sea play an important role in the implementation of the Black Sea Strategy, while they are currently struggling with Georgia.
