Pre-trial detention replaced with bail for former Deputy Chairman of Khashuri City Council

The former Deputy Chairman of Khashuri City Council Levan Gamrekeli, who was accused of large-scale theft by an organized group, was released on bail in the amount of 10,000 GEL.

Two other people arrested with him, Paata Nozadze and Roman Metivishvili, were released on bail in the same amount.

As InterpressNews was told by the Prosecutor’s Office, the preventive detention of the accused Levan Gamrekeli was replaced with bail in exchange for full compensation for the damage caused.

“At this stage, the defendant has already covered 2 million GEL of the damage. As for the amount of the damage caused, the defendant was given a specific time to compensate. It is also worth noting that the real estate and accounts of the defendant Levan Gamrekeli have been seized,” the agency said.

Levan Gamrekeli and two other persons were arrested in November 2025. According to the investigation, Levan Gamrekeli, together with Paata Nozadze and Roman Metivishvili, secretly took possession of state-owned pipelines worth 5,000,000 GEL in the territory of the Shida Kartli region in 2020-2023, as a result of which the state suffered a large amount of material damage.

Levan Gamrekeli, Paata Nozadze and Roman Metivishvili were charged under Article 177, Part 4, Subparagraphs “a” and “b” of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which refers to large-scale theft committed by an organized group. The aforementioned act is punishable by up to 10 years of imprisonment.
