Freedom House - Sanaia’s confinement over a Facebook post criticizing Georgia’s ruling party is a blatant violation of his right to free expression, we urge Sanaia’s immediate and unconditional release

We are alarmed by today’s sentencing of journalist Vakho Sanaia to two weeks’ administrative detention, - Freedom House writes on social media.

“Sanaia’s confinement over a Facebook post criticizing Georgia’s ruling party is a blatant violation of his right to free expression, and the latest in a series of concerning attempts by the government to silence its critics. We urge Sanaia’s immediate and unconditional release”, reads the statement.

The Tbilisi City Court sent journalist Vakho Sanaia to 14 days of administrative detention for a post written on social media about the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, and MP Vladimer Bozhadze.
