The so-called “ministry of foreign affairs” of occupied Abkhazia responds to the launch of an investigation into the statement made by Giorgi Baramidze by the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office.
The so-called Foreign Ministry states that the aforementioned “criminal prosecution should serve as a warning to everyone who is ready to speak openly about Georgia’s armed aggression and the crimes committed during its course.”
“The ministry of foreign affairs of the republic of Abkhazia considers it necessary to comment on the initiation of a criminal case against the Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, State Minister Giorgi Baramidze in connection with his public statements on war crimes committed against the Abkhazian nation during the armed aggression of Georgia against the republic of Abkhazia in 1992-1993.
The reason for the initiation of a criminal case was the statements made by Giorgi Baramidze during a public discussion of the events of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict of 1992-1993. Speaking on the issue of the exchange of prisoners of war during this period, he stated that the Georgian side was unable to carry out the exchange because they did not have Abkhaz prisoners of war. In particular, he said: “We did not have Abkhaz prisoners of war because we were shooting them”...
It is obvious that this criminal prosecution should serve as a warning to everyone who is ready to speak openly about the armed aggression of Georgia and the crimes committed during its course…
Instead of a constructive and responsible rethinking of the events, a part of Georgian society continues to deny the crimes committed, cynically replacing them with politicized interpretations.
However, it is impossible to completely forget the historical truth. Over time, objective assessments of the events are receiving more and more confirmation, including from that part of Georgian society that is showing a willingness to admit the mistakes made, including representatives of the Georgian political elite,” the so-called “foreign ministry” of the occupied region says in a statement.
