Georgia’s Public Defender Levan Ioseliani is on an official visit to Washington.

According to the Office of the Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani held meetings with representatives of the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs (EUR), the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL), the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), as well as the Office of Foreign Assistance (FAO) of the U.S. Department of State.

“Public Defender Levan Ioseliani provided the American side with information about the human rights situation in Georgia and spoke about the main trends in the human rights situation in the country and his recommendations. Particular interest was expressed at the meetings regarding freedom of expression, the importance of conducting effective investigations, and issues related to the rights of religious and national minorities; the conversation also touched upon the rights situation of people living in the occupied territories.

At the meetings held at the U.S. Department of State, Levan Ioseliani focused attention on the long-standing cooperation between the Office of the Public Defender and American institutions; he emphasized Georgia’s aspiration to continue moving in the direction of strengthening democratic principles and expressed the hope that the close support of the United States of America in this process will continue in the future as well.
