The Ministry of Internal Affairs has released a statement regarding the discovery of the body of young woman Keso Dekanosidze in the sea in Batumi.

According to the ministry, the investigation has established that the case concerns suicide.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has also released video evidence.

“We would like to provide the public with detailed information about the circumstances established as a result of the comprehensive procedural and investigative measures carried out in the criminal case concerning the death of Keso Dekanosidze.

As part of the investigation launched under Article 115 of the Criminal Code in connection with Keso Dekanosidze’s death, the Adjara Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs conducted dozens of procedural and investigative measures, questioned numerous witnesses, and processed and analyzed footage obtained from surveillance cameras showing Keso Dekanosidze’s movements after arriving in Batumi and her route toward the seashore. Based on the totality of this evidence, the fact of suicide has been established at this stage.

On August 29 of this year, Keso Dekanosidze traveled from Tbilisi to Batumi by train. Surveillance camera footage shows that at 8:57 p.m. on August 29, Keso Dekanosidze left the train carriage at the Batumi Railway Passenger Station. At 9:00 p.m., she exited the station building and, alone, took public transportation toward the center of Batumi.

At 9:34 p.m., Keso Dekanosidze got off public transportation at a stop near the Batumi cable car. She then proceeded first along Iakob Gogebashvili Street and subsequently along Egnate Ninoshvili Street toward the central entrance of Batumi Boulevard. She continued walking alone toward the seashore, in the vicinity of the so-called Pier Batumi bridge. Before reaching the seashore, she purchased a lighter from a kiosk located along the boulevard’s pedestrian promenade.

According to eyewitness testimony, upon reaching the shoreline near the bridge, Keso Dekanosidze lit a church candle, left her personal belongings and clothing on the shore, and then entered the sea. When she did not return, eyewitnesses notified the Public Safety Management Center - 112.

Immediately after receiving the report, relevant units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs arrived at the scene, including firefighters and rescuers, who joined the search operation using appropriate equipment. As a result of intensive search efforts, firefighters and rescuers located Keso Dekanosidze’s body in the sea off the coast of Kobuleti on August 31. No signs of violence were found on the deceased’s body.

The investigation continues under Article 115 of the Criminal Code,” the statement said.
