Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze has nominated Tamaz Borashvili for the position of head of the State Security Service.

Kobakhidze made the announcement at a briefing held at the Government Administration.

Tamaz Borashvili has so far served as deputy head of the State Security Service.

“Today, we will submit Tamaz Borashvili’s candidacy to the Parliament of Georgia for the position of head of the State Security Service. Tamaz Borashvili has served in the law enforcement system for more than 20 years. He began his career in the state security system at the lowest level and went through a consistent career progression at various levels within the Counterintelligence Department.

From 2017 to 2022, Tamaz Borashvili served in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia as First Deputy Head and Head of the General Inspection. In 2022, he returned to the State Security Service, where he served as Head of the Tbilisi Main Division of the State Security Department and as Director of the State Security Department. This year, he was appointed Deputy Head of the State Security Service.

I would like to emphasize that over the past two decades, Tamaz Borashvili will be the first career official from the state security system to assume the position of head of the state security system. We believe this will play an important role in strengthening the system institutionally.

I am confident that the Parliament of Georgia will grant its confidence to Tamaz Borashvili. I wish Tamaz Borashvili success in his position as head of the State Security Service,” Irakli Kobakhidze said.

It should be noted that Tamaz Borashvili’s candidacy for the position of head of the State Security Service must be approved by Parliament.

For reference, Gela Geladze, the head of the State Security Service, recently announced on social media that he was stepping down from the position.
