It is very good that the US is concerned with the transparency of foreign influence; what we had been asserting over the past years—and what our political opponents and foreign-linked agents labeled as "Russian law"—has turned out to be the foundation of democracy, - Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated while commenting on US legislation regarding the registration of individuals as foreign agents.

According to the Prime Minister, transparency is essentially a foundation of democracy, and transparency should be strengthened in every democratic country.

"Transparency is one of the fundamental principles of democracy. It is very good that the US is concerned with transparency regarding foreign influence; what we had been asserting for years - and what our political opponents and foreign agent networks labeled as 'Russian law'—has turned out to be the foundation of democracy. Naturally, transparency is indeed a cornerstone of democracy, and it should be strengthened in every democratic country. We took serious steps in this regard in Georgia, and it yielded results. Ensuring that any foreign political influence operates transparently is a key priority for us," the Prime Minister stated.

Notably, the US Department of Justice has reminded the public that violations of foreign agent registration requirements carry both civil and criminal liability. This was stated in a release issued by the Department. "The Department is committed to upholding the rule of law and keeping our country safe against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. It does so by holding to account those who violate federal law. Two such federal laws — the Foreign Agents Registration Act, known as FARA, and 18 U.S.C. § 951," the reads statement. The Department of Justice calls upon both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals to comply with federal laws.
