“They will make the Constitutional Court issue a completely unconstitutional ruling. The Constitutional Court has been left with just one function: to formalize decisions made by Georgian Dream. I want to tell Georgian Dream that this is an entirely illegal and unconstitutional act that will have catastrophic consequences for them,” said Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of parliament from the For Georgia party, commenting on the scheduling of hearings on the constitutional lawsuit seeking to ban opposition parties.
He also said that adding the For Georgia party to the list once again confirms that this is a continuation of the campaign against Giorgi Gakharia, which began with a physical attack and was followed by political persecution, political revenge, and retribution.
“They will make the Constitutional Court issue a completely unconstitutional ruling. The Constitutional Court has been left with just one function: to formalize decisions made by Georgian Dream. This effectively means that, under Georgian Dream, the Constitutional Court serves as a notary.
“As for our political force, nothing unexpected has happened. We have been through worse. I want to tell Georgian Dream that this is an entirely illegal and unconstitutional act that will have catastrophic consequences for them. Whether it happens today or tomorrow, the time is not far off when Georgian Dream will pay a very heavy price for what it is doing - from the 88 members of parliament who signed the lawsuit to every actor involved in this process. Adding our party to this list will have catastrophic consequences for Georgian Dream, and it once again confirms that this is a continuation of the campaign against Giorgi Gakharia, which began with a physical attack and was followed by political persecution, political revenge, and retribution.
“Georgian Dream is declaring dissenting opinions unconstitutional, stripping citizens of the right guaranteed by the Constitution of Georgia to choose the political force they prefer. It is depriving Georgian citizens of this right - their right to vote. This is a direct departure from the constitutional framework.
“It appears that Georgian Dream was not satisfied with violating Article 78 and is now fundamentally abandoning the obligation to uphold the Constitution’s core principles. These include the principle that the people are the source of power, and that Georgian citizens have the right to express dissenting opinions, choose the political party they prefer, and temporarily entrust it with the authority to represent them.
“By adding our political party to this list in particular, I want to reiterate that Georgian Dream will face catastrophic consequences,” Giorgi Sharashidze said.
