Giga Parulava: Manana Kobakhidze must clearly explain why she made her decision now and what instructions the Constitutional Court has received

Manana Kobakhidze’s decision to recuse herself from the proceedings clearly indicates that Georgian Dream’s political team has already made its decision and that instructions have been given to Constitutional Court judges, Giga Parulava, a member of the For Georgia party, said on PalitraNews’ Resume programme.

Parulava was commenting on the announcement that the Constitutional Court would begin hearing the lawsuit concerning the potential ban on political parties.

According to Parulava, banning political parties would have catastrophic consequences for Georgian Dream.

“Given the current political developments, nothing can be ruled out under the Georgian Dream regime. Manana Kobakhidze’s decision to recuse herself from the proceedings clearly indicates that Georgian Dream’s political team has already made its decision and that instructions have been given to Constitutional Court judges.

Kobakhidze must understand that recusing herself from a process that harms not only the political process and opposition parties but also the entire country, both internationally and domestically, is one thing. However, in the interests of the country, she must have the opportunity and the willingness to clearly explain why she made this decision precisely now, at this particular moment. She must say what instructions the Constitutional Court has received and what developments will follow.

As for the constitutional lawsuit itself, we consider the use of constitutional mechanisms to ban political parties unacceptable. If we claim to be a democratic country, parties must be defeated in a democracy through free and fair elections.

Georgian Dream has chosen a path that effectively formalizes a dictatorship. From the outset, we did not rule out the possibility that Georgian Dream would take this step. It is now clear that our party has been added to the list alongside other opposition parties.

The proceedings before the Constitutional Court, the banning of political parties, and the inclusion of our party in the constitutional lawsuit will have catastrophic consequences for Georgian Dream. They are legalizing a dictatorship, which also effectively amounts to abolishing elections. Consequently, this process will have catastrophic consequences for them,” Parulava stated.
