"I do not expect us to have in-depth discussions regarding Georgia or the Black Sea; however, as you know, these topics will inevitably come up in the context of security issues," Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, told journalists ahead of the European Council summit.
According to her, today’s meeting will cover issues such as competitiveness, energy, economic imbalances, support for Ukraine, and the situation in the Middle East. Kallas added that there will also be a discussion regarding the enlargement of the European Union.
"This evening, we will have a discussion on the issue of enlargement. It is crucial that we do not reduce the enlargement process to mere bilateral relations. My point is that, when viewed as a whole, Europe is actually a very small continent. In reality, we need to be stronger together with the countries located in Europe. On Monday, we also held a discussion with the Foreign Ministers regarding the security aspects of enlargement—specifically, what contributions these countries could make toward ensuring the European Union's security once they become members. Therefore, I expect a thorough discussion on this topic today, including what steps we ourselves need to take," Kallas noted.
When asked whether issues concerning Georgia would be discussed, the EU High Representative replied:
"I do not anticipate in-depth discussions on Georgia or the Black Sea region; however, as you know, these topics are bound to arise within the context of security discussions. That said, there are indeed many issues that give cause for concern."
