No one any longer believes that there is still residual, elementary, even small capacity in “Dream” for the country to return to the path of a European future, – this was stated by Giorgi Sharashidze, a deputy of the party “Gakharia for Georgia”, responding to the conclusions published by the European Council.
According to him, the attempt to ban opposition parties is a direct signal of the establishment of dictatorship in the country, which fully contradicts the process of European integration.
“Against the background of the ban on parties, what expectation can there be from ‘Georgian Dream’? That is, an extremely undemocratic and unconstitutional step has been taken regardless of what decision the Constitutional Court may take. After this, what is there to talk about, what democracy and what European perspective can one speak of under the conditions of ‘Dream’. We are saying directly that we were talking about and proving and substantiating that there was authoritarianism and now, after this constitutional complaint, we are saying that this is a direct attempt to establish dictatorship, because one-party rule is nothing other than dictatorship. After this, that they still call for dialogue… this is completely a paradox and insolence, that you call on the European Union from here. You yourself stopped all kinds of communication, the accession process, you officially came out and said that you are stopping the accession process. Then you followed this with the adoption of dozens of undemocratic laws, you suppressed differing opinion, now you are banning parties altogether. With these results do you want to sit at the negotiations table? No one any longer believes that there is still residual, elementary, even small capacity in ‘Dream’ for the country to return to the path of a European future. This is the most regrettable reality. But of course it will not be like this. Whether today or tomorrow, ‘Dream’ will first of all have to bear responsibility and, of course, we will return this country to the path of a European future,” – stated Sharashidze.
For information: the European Council emphasizes that the enlargement process is determined by merit-based individual progress, which requires candidate countries to continue reforms, especially in the area of the rule of law.
In the conclusions published taking into account the Granada Declaration, it is noted that the enlargement of the European Union is a geostrategic investment in peace and stability, for which both the future member states and the European Union itself must be ready for the moment of accession.
