The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia expresses concern regarding the recent statements of European Union representatives that relate to the ongoing legal proceedings in Georgia’s Constitutional Court, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The Ministry considers that questioning the legitimacy of the legal proceedings and pre-judging the court process before the court has substantively examined the case constitutes an attempt at undue pressure on the constitutional institution and interference in Georgia’s internal affairs, whereas respect for the rule of law requires that the court be given the opportunity to examine the case independently, in accordance with the Constitution of Georgia and the applicable legislation.
The Ministry also notes with concern the statements made by European Union representatives regarding Georgia’s internal political and legal processes, as well as the rhetoric used, which hinders the objective assessment of the ongoing processes and impedes constructive cooperation between Georgia and the European Union.
The Ministry calls on all relevant representatives to refrain from statements and actions that may pre-judge ongoing court processes or be perceived as interference in the activities of independent constitutional institutions, and to uphold the principles of the rule of law, judicial independence, and mutual respect,” the statement says.
