Irakli Cheishvili: I am convinced that even if no party is banned, the European Union will not change its rhetoric toward us - I do not rule out that they may develop something, but we are absolutely ready for everything

I am convinced that even if no party is banned, the European Union will not change its rhetoric toward us — I do not rule out that they may develop something [sanctions], but we are absolutely ready for everything, — Georgian Dream MP Irakli Cheishvili told journalists.

According to him, it does not matter to the EU bureaucracy whether opposition parties are banned or not, because they do not change their rhetoric.

Cheishvili said that EU representatives do not need a reason to apply double standards toward Georgia and to speak the language of hatred.

“Even before the court process was scheduled, they do not change their rhetoric. Over the past two or three years, from the side of the European Union we have been seeing rhetoric — every month they bake new packages of sanctions, they threaten us with the suspension of visa-free travel, they put us through a firestorm of criticism. Whether these parties will be banned or not is of no essential importance to them, probably because they do not change their rhetoric. I am convinced that even if no party is banned, the European Union will not change its rhetoric toward us. They do not need a reason to apply double standards toward us and to speak the language of hatred. Even before the court process was scheduled, even before the constitutional lawsuit was filed, they developed more than one sanctions package in relation to Georgia, and we have seen more than one high-ranking official sanctioned. The claim that today they are blaming the deterioration of our relations on the court process is incorrect. Even before the court process their rhetoric had not changed and, on the contrary, the rhetoric of today’s Eurobureaucracy toward Georgia was getting worse every day. This will also be just another language of blackmail, and I do not rule out that they may develop something, but we are absolutely ready for everything. We are doing a national Georgian cause and, accordingly, we do not intend to retreat at any cost,” Cheishvili stated.

For information, the Constitutional Court will examine the lawsuit on the constitutionality of the activities of political parties and the issue of their ban on 21, 22, and 23 October.
