Lead level was higher than the standard permissible levels in 23 cases out of total 1176 samples

High level of lead was not found in the meat samples in 2018, while lead levels were higher than the standard permissible levels in 15 samples of raw milk and 8 samples of spices, - Zurab Chekurishvili, Director of the National Food Agency, said today at the parliamentary committee on the agrarian issues.

“A total of 1 176 samples have been examined, the lead level was higher than the standard permissible levels in 23 cases. We have a good dynamic after we took some measures and imposed tighter control on spices last year. In 2017, 29 violations were revealed from 189 samples, while in 2018, we detected 8 violations in 137 samples. The lead was in compliance with the standard permissible levels in children food products, fish, bread products, grains and vegetables. High level of lead was not found in the meat samples. Lead levels were higher than the standard permissible levels in 15 samples of raw milk and 8 samples of spices,” Chekurishvili said.
