NDI poll: 39% of respondents disapprove Georgia’s EU membership because they consider it will “trigger conflict with Russia"

According to the NDI survey, conducted by the National Democratic Institute (NDI), 66 % of respondents supporting Georgia's EU membership think that integration into the organization will improve the country's economy.

To the question – “Why the EU membership is important for Georgia”, 41 % think it will bring more security to Georgia; will create more jobs (17 %); will increase the possibility for restoration of the country’s territorial integrity (14 %); will strengthen the democratic development (12 %).

As for those respondents, who disapprove Georgia’s EU membership, 39% of them say they disapprove the country’s EU membership, because they believe that it will “trigger conflicts with Russia", 31% say- they “prefer closer relations with Russia", 19% think - this will “create a threat to Georgia's national identity”, 9% believe that it is “unrealistic and will never happen", 7% say “it reduce the chance of restoration of the country’s territorial integrity", 4% think that "it allows the West to interfere in the internal affairs of Georgia", 4% say "it will harm the economy," 4% think that "Georgia have a big burden of regulations," 3% say they disapprove because it is unacceptable for the political party they supports.

The survey results reflect data collected from March 28 to April 15. The average margin of error is +/- 2,3 %.
