Ombudsman calls on  political officials to make public statements, condemning violence

The Public Defender of Georgia Nino Lomjaria has responded to the incidents that took place during Tbilisi Pride, organized by the LGBTQI rights activists.

The Public Defender considers it important political officials to make public statements, condemning the violent actions.

“A lot of offenses committed by the counter demonstrators were revealed, which requires additional, timely and adequate reaction from the investigative bodies. Namely, there was:

Attack on journalists and interference with their professional activities; Threat to violence and physical assault against participants of the rally; Attempt to attack the Deputy Public Defender and threat of violence;

The Public Defender considers it important political officials to make public statements, condemning the violent actions.

Despite political differences, the whole political spectrum should agree that humiliating treatment and encouragement of violence against any group is inadmissible. Tolerance and respect is the foundation our country's constitutional legal order is based and it is threatened by strengthening such groups, "the statement reads.
