The international flights can not be implemented in occupied region of Abkhazia (namely, at Sokhumi International Airport), since it contradicts the international law, ICAO regulationsand the legislative of Georgia, - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia said while commenting on the Russian media reports that Russia makes attempts to open the airport located in Babushera for the international flights.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia explains that under the Law of Georgia on Occupied Territories, the Abkhazian region and its airspace are subject to a state of emergency, a special legal regime, which bans international air traffic in the occupied territories.

“The International Civil Aviation Organization firmly supports the sovereignty, territorial integrity of Georgia and the unity of Georgian airspace. According to the ICAO regulations, Sukhumi Airport and the corresponding airspace have been closed since 1993. Thus, in the occupied region of Abkhazia (in particular, at the airport of Sukhumi) international flights cannot be carried out, since this contradicts the international law, ICAO regulations and the legislative of Georgia. The Georgian transport administration will use all available levers, levers, including international mechanisms, in order to respect international and ICAO standards”, – the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

Russian media reported on July 26 that the Sokhumi Airport had been granted the URAS international code. URAS code is granted to CIS countries. Under the granted code, Sokhumi Airport has been registered as Rostov’s airspace.
