Khelvachauri Municipality Assembly member detained for bribery

The officers of the Anti-corruption Agency of the State Security Service of Georgia have detained member of Khelvachauri Municipality Assembly Jambul T. and citizen Zaza T. on charges of receiving a USD 51 380 bribe, the State Security Service of Georgia has said.

An investigation has established that the member of Khelvachauri Municipality Assembly Jambul T., in agreement with his relative Zaza T., promised a foreign citizen to provide assistance in purchasing 12 845,00 square meters of state-owned land plot located in a coastal strip of the Black Sea. In particular, Jambul T. had to introduce at the Assembly sitting the issue of sale of the land plot through auction and persuade members of the Assembly to take a positive decision about it, in exchange to what, he demanded USD 4 per a square meter, in total USD 51 380, out of which he received USD 1000 in advance.

The investigation is in progress under Article 338, paragraph III, sub-paragraph “E” of the Criminal Code of Georgia, involving demanding and taking particularly large amount of bribe.

The investigation is carried out by the Anti-corruption Agency of the State Security Service of Georgia.
