UNESCO names Tbilisi as Capital of World Book 2021

UNESCO has named Tbilisi as the Capital of the World Book 2021.

According to the UNESCO Director-General, the decision was made on the basis of the recommendation of the World Book Capital Advisory Committee. The slogan of the program is "And your next book is ..?"

According to UNESCO, the program includes several important activities. As part of the program, libraries will be opened, a book festival will be held for children, digital projects will be presented to transform books into games and to restore Georgia's first publishing house.

The purpose of the events is to promote reading and make books accessible to all social groups.

UNESCO grants the title of World Book Capital to various cities since 2001. In 2020, the title was awarded to Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, and in 2019 - to Sharjah, the city in the United Arab Emirates.
