Former political prisoner Melor Vachnadze arrested in France for murder attempt

Melor Vachnadze, who had been released as a political prisoner in Georgia, has been detained in France. He has been in custody for six months.

Vachnadze released a video a few days ago from the prison, where he speaks about the incident. He says he was detained in connection with the murder at a supermarket, though he pleads not guilty and accuses France of political persecution.

According to AMBEBI.GE, Melor Vachnadze is accused of murder attempt. Another person was also detained in the same case, reportedly while traveling from France to Poland.

"The charge is a murder attempt. The case concerns shooting in Montpellier, at a shop near my house. I was arrested three months after the incident. The judge told me that since I was active and had been holding rallies in France, I could help people to hide and that is why they are punishing me, for this incomprehensible motive: I am not the shooter, I ask France to publicize the evidence and convict me if I am guilty, or release me”, Vachnadze said.

It is noteworthy that Melor Vachnadze was arrested in 2019 as well, in Germany. It was then reported that he was arrested for stealing shoes at a store, which Vachnadze denied.

AMBEBI.GE contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia to verify information on the detention of Melor Vachnadze:

"The Georgian has contacted with Mr. Vachnadze and offered him to help. Vachnadze accepted the offer. After completion of relevant procedures, the consulate, within its competence, will defend his rights,"- the Ministry told AMBEBI.GE.
