MIA - Georgian citizen takes Georgian border guard hostage on unagreed section of Georgian-Azerbaijani border

The officers of the Border Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has detained a citizen of Georgia on charges of unlawful purchase, keep and possession of firearms and hostage-taking, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Ministry said that on January 14, citizen of Georgia G.I. threatened the Georgian border guard by using firearms and a hand grenade and forced him to move to the unagreed section of the border.

MIA said the incident is now completely over.

An investigation has been launched under provisions III and IV, Article 236 and sub-provision I, provision II, Article 144 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.

“The Ministry of Internal Affairs thanked its Azerbaijani counterparts for effective cooperation in connection with this incident, ”the statement reads.
