Tbilisi City Court convicts Zurab Adeishvili guilty of organizing illegal deprivation of Koba Davitashvili’s liberty

Based on the evidence presented by the Prosecutor's Office, the Tbilisi City Court found former Prosecutor General Zurab Adeishvili guilty of organizing illegal deprivation of liberty for Koba Davitashvili and abuse of power.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, during the court hearing, the evidence examined by the Office proved the following: in November 2007, opposition protests against the government were taking place on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi. In early November 2007, the then Prosecutor General of Georgia, Zurab Adeishvili, summoned Davit Karseladze, Deputy Head of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance, who was supervising the Investigation Department of the Revenue Service. Zurab Adeishvili instructed Davit Karseladze to control the crowded places and to prevent campaigns by the opposition leaders at similar places.

On November 7, 2007, the rally on Rustaveli Avenue was raided twice by law enforcement officers. The law enforcement officers were instructed by Zurab Adeishvili to detain Koba Davitashvili and transfer him to the Investigative Service building. Koba Davitashvili was beaten with batons by police and was taken to Gori Hospital instead of the investigation department, where he was injured in the head after being beaten.

“Koba Davitashvili received health injuries as a result of the violence carried out against him during his illegal detention.

According to the verdict of the Tbilisi City Court of January 20, 2021, Zurab Adeishvili was found guilty in absentia for organizing the illegal deprivation of liberty and abuse of power. His final sentence has been set at 6 years as a result of the application of the amnesty issued in 2012.
