Alexei Navalny sentenced to 3.5 years in a general regime colony

The Moscow City Court has changed the suspended sentence of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny to imprisonment.

According to Russian media, the court sentenced Navalny to 3.5 years in a general regime colony. According to them, Navalny's wife cried while hearing the court decision, and Navalny himself met the verdict calmly.

For the record, the Moscow City Court was hearing the allegations of the Federal Penitentiary Service, according to which Alexei Navalny violated the probation sentence for embezzlement in 2014. In December 2014, Alexei Navalny was found guilty by a Moscow Court of embezzling 30 million Russian rubles in the Yves Rocher case and embezzling 16 million rubles in the Kirovles case. In August 2017, the probationary period was extended until December 29, 2020. Navalny, who was taken to a Berlin hospital with poisoning due to Novichok nerve agent, returned to Russia on January 17 after several months of treatment. He was arrested at the Moscow airport and sentenced to 30 days in pre-trial detention.
