Committee of Ministers of Council of Europe sets September 6 as deadline for Russia to pay compensation directly to Georgian government relating to deportees’ case

According to the Ministry of Justice, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which oversees the implementation of the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights, at its meeting held on June 7-9, 2021, evaluated the enforcement of a ruling on deportees and made a decision.

According to the decision, the committee set September 6 as the deadline for Russia to pay compensation directly to the Georgian government (for distribution to the victims), or to sign a memorandum to allow compensation to be paid through the Council of Europe.

As it is known, at the sittings of March and June 2021, Russia no longer refused the payment of compensation and instead expressed readiness to transfer compensation to the victims to the account of the Council of Europe and to sign a memorandum with the Council of Europe. As it is known to the public, the Government of Georgia has been actively working to enforce the decision of the European Court of Human Rights. The Committee of Ministers reiterated that the deadline for payment of compensation expired on April 30, 2019 and expressed deep concern that the Russian authorities had not fulfilled their obligation to pay compensation.
