The Georgian Government's uncertain positions on supporting Ukraine may be related to Bidzina Ivanishvili and his family members having business interests in Russia, Eka Gigauri, chairwoman of Transparency International Georgia, said during a presentation of a study on Bidzina Ivanishvili.

According to a Transparency International Georgia study, Bidzina Ivanishvili has serious business interests in a hostile state, which could pose a certain threat to the country's foreign policy. According to the study, Ivanishvili's influence on democratic institutions qualifies as state seizures.

According to a non-governmental organization report, Ivanishvili owned at least 10 Russian companies through his own offshore companies in 2012-2019. According to Transparency International Georgia, Bidzina Ivanishvili's relatives, who share companies with family members of former and current high-ranking Russian officials, were also active in Russia.

"Despite formally leaving politics, Ivanishvili retains influence over Georgia's ruling party and a number of institutions, where persons who used to work for him or his companies remain in high positions. Such influence on democratic institutions qualifies as state seizures. After coming to power, the ruling party of Georgia, Georgian Dream, did not hide that they were going to pursue a so-called non-irritation policy towards Russia. Over the years, including with the support of government policies, certain segments of the Georgian economy have become heavily dependent on Russia," Gigauri said.
