Emmanuel Macron to Salome Zurabishvili: It is important that your country supports the European policy of sanctions and that it prevents attempts by Russia to circumvent the existing sanctions regime

It is important that your country supports the European policy of sanctions and that it prevents attempts by Russia to circumvent the existing sanctions regime, reads the letter sent by the President of France Emmanuel Macron to the President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili.

According to Macron, Georgia has been able to demonstrate once again the conviction of its commitment to democracy and has just submitted the second part of the membership questionnaire

"Madame President,

On the occasion of the Georgian National Day, it is my pleasure to extend to you and to all the Georgian people my most sincere wishes for happiness, prosperity and peace.

For almost three months now, the European continent has been experiencing a murderous war of aggression launched by Russia against a sovereign country, Ukraine. Faced with this attack, which is seriously undermining the security and stability of our continent, it is more than ever necessary for the European family to remain united. By supporting the Ukrainian people, whether by welcoming the many refugees currently present on your territory or by providing humanitarian aid, Georgians have demonstrated their full and complete adherence to the values that are so dear to us. Georgia's successive votes at the United Nations in favor of resolutions demanding an immediate end to the war in Ukraine, calling on Russia to cease all attacks against civilians and finally excluding it from the Human Rights Council, sent a very important signal.

While Georgia has been able to demonstrate once again the conviction of its commitment to democracy and has just submitted the second part of the membership questionnaire, it is important that your country supports the European policy of sanctions and that it prevents attempts by Russia to circumvent the existing sanctions regime.

I am also aware of your desire to consolidate the rule of law by carrying out the necessary reforms, in particular those of Justice - know that you can count on our unfailing support on this path.

As you know, the year 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the restoration of our diplomatic relations. During these years, we have been able to develop a special bond, rooted in our common history marked by trust and friendship. I am delighted with this and express the hope that we will be able to continue our already exemplary cooperation within the framework of the structured “Amilakhvari” dialogue that we launched in February 2019.

Finally, I would also like to reaffirm to you with the greatest conviction our unwavering committment to the full sovereignty of Georgia. As always, France will closely monitor the situation in Abkhazia and South Ossetia and will not recognize any of the pseudo-referendums held there.

Please accept, Madam President, the assurances of my highest respect," reads the letter.
