Mikheil Saakashvili: We should offer Abkhazians to create a federation of Georgia and Abkhazia with an administrative center in Kutaisi

According to the third President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, we should offer Abkhazians to create a federation of Georgia and Abkhazia with an administrative center in Kutaisi. In his Facebook post, Saakashvili speaks about unification with Abkhazians, saying that together with Georgia, Abkhazia can become a full-fledged entity of the federation and part of the EU with full guarantees of development and identity.

"In the near future, after the victory of Ukraine, we will not only join the European Union, but also be able to negotiate with the people living in the Russian-occupied territory today. With the withdrawal of the Russian occupation army, the Tskhinvali issue will be resolved on its own.

The situation with Abkhazia is more difficult. Much more people live there than in Samachablo and the degree of alienation is also higher.

In my opinion, we should offer them to create a common state of Georgians and Abkhazians, a federation of Georgia and Abkhazia with an administrative center in Kutaisi. There will be dual citizenship in this state, which means that a citizen of Abkhazia will automatically be a citizen of Georgia, while citizens of the rest of Georgia will not automatically be citizens of Abkhazia. This will neutralize Abkhazians’ fear of assimilation. Both Georgian and Abkhazian will be the official languages of the state. The Parliament in Kutaisi will have two chambers and both subjects of the federation will have equal representation in the upper chamber. The President of Abkhazia will always be the Vice-President of Georgia.

Will Abkhazians agree on this? Recent decades have shown well that Abkhazia has no chance of international recognition. Together with Georgia, with our proposed model, they can become a full-fledged entity of the federation and part of the European Union with full guarantees of development and identity protection”, Saakashvili said.
