RFE/RL: European Commission has come to a tentative agreement - status and conditions for Ukraine and Moldova, conditions and then status for Georgia

European Commission has reached a preliminary agreement on the recommendation on granting EU candidate status to Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.

RFE/RL's Europe Editor Rikard Jozwiak was informed by sources in Brussels that a preliminary agreement on the assessment to be released by the European Commission on June 17 would make a different decision about Georgia compared to Ukraine and Moldova.

According to Jozwiak, Ukraine and Moldova will receive the status of EU candidate country along with the mandatory conditions. Georgia will now receive the conditions and the chance to be granted candidate status in the future. The leaders will discuss the issue at a European Council meeting next week.

The European Commission will monitor compliance with the conditions and the initial assessment is expected to be published by the end of the year.

For information, the European Commission will issue a recommendation on the applications of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova today, June 17, after which EU leaders will announce a decision on granting candidate status to the three countries at a summit of the European Council on June 23-24.
