Public Defender: Not only technical performers or supervisors, but the system's indifference to safety issues are guilty before Marita

Not only technical performers or supervisors, but the system's indifference to safety issues are guilty before Marita - including the legislative, executive and judicial authorities, self-government! Public Defender Nino Lomjaria said the above in response to the tragic death of 13-year-old Marita Meparishvili in Vake Park yesterday.

According to her, respect for the memory of the deceased by politicians should not be expressed only by condolences but by changes so that such tragedies do not happen again.

"On November 24, 2017, 11 people died due to the lack of fire safety rules in a hotel in Batumi...

On October 8, 2021, 9 people, including 3 children, died in Batumi due to non-observance of construction safety rules...

After all that, on June 23, 2022, the Parliament of Georgia adopted a law in an accelerated manner, which made it possible to build buildings in Batumi without observing the standards of sustainability, fire safety, and evacuation!

We immediately appealed this law to the Constitutional Court, so that the court would suspend its action immediately, as it posed a threat to people's lives and health, but the court did not even consider this issue, and the head of the government of Adjara "referred to us" in his usual style.

Why did I write all this? I wrote this because not only technical performers or supervisors, but the system's indifference to safety issues are guilty before Marita - including the legislative, executive and judicial authorities, self-government! The system, which even after the death of dozens of people, including children, dares to legalize construction without safety rules, does not consider the submitted complaint, allows officials be arrogant.

Respect for the memory of the deceased by politicians should not be expressed only by condolences but by changes so that such tragedies do not happen again”, said Nino Lomjaria.

For information, three children were electrocuted when they were trying to retrieve the ball that fell in the fountain in Vake Park. The children were taken to the clinic by an ambulance. The condition of one of the children, a 13-year-old girl, was serious from the beginning and she died in the Khechinashvili clinic. One child is still in Iashvili clinic, and another is placed in New Hospitals clinic.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs launched an investigation under Article 240 prima of the Criminal Code, which refers to the violation of safety rules, which resulted in less serious or serious injury to health. According to the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, in the course of ongoing investigative proceedings, the case was re-qualified under Article 240 (1) I and II parts of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which implies the breach of safety regulations at electric facilities that resulted in death. The committed crime envisions from 4 to 7 years of imprisonment.
