Irakli Kobakhidze: The July 5th crime had no organizers - on March 7-8, the storming of the Parliament was organized and if we follow the low standard, Giorgi Vashadze and other opposition leaders are the first to be arrested

From the legal point of view, the crime of July 5 had no organizers - on March 7-8, when the Parliament was violently stormed, the gathering was organized. If we follow the low standard, Giorgi Vashadze and other opposition leaders are the first to be arrested, Georgian Dream chairman Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists.

According to him, organizing means when they say, "let's go to a specific place and do violence to a specific person, and [July 5] was not like that."

"Legally, it was impossible to identify the organizers until now. No facts are established where the crime was organized. The organizer doesn't appear. When some people talk about punishing the organizers, then they should say who was legally the organizer.

I want to remind you that on March 7-8, when there was a violent storming of the Parliament, there were direct calls, a gathering was organized, and moreover, people were called to besiege the Parliament building. This siege was followed by direct acts of violence. If we follow a low standard, Giorgi Vashadze and other opposition leaders are the first to be arrested, but this is a low standard and very risky. I want to say that from the legal point of view, the July 5 crime had no organizers. In any case, this is the legal situation to date. I don't know if the prosecutor's office will establish anything.

Organized crime means what - for example, if Koka Morgoshia had called on specific people to go to a certain place and physically assault a certain person. The organizer tells us to go to a specific place and abuse a specific person - there was no such [call]," said Irakli Kobakhidze.

As for this year's events planned within the framework of Pride Week, Kobakhidze says that the Ministry of Internal Affairs will provide security.

"It is the duty of the state to protect people's safety. You remember, unfortunately, how the events unfolded on July 5. The violence was spontaneous and therefore it was difficult for the Ministry of Internal Affairs to respond. This had an objective response. But, for example, on the second day, when it was easy to predict the events, there was no spontaneous violence, there the Ministry of Internal Affairs protected people's safety to the end. Even now, certain events are held within the framework of the week. There, too, the Ministry of Internal Affairs provides security from start to finish. It is the government's responsibility and it naturally ensures security from start to finish. This is the government's responsibility, and of course, all agencies will meet this responsibility," said Irakli Kobakhidze.

For information, "March of Dignity for Solidarity" - with this slogan, on July 5, 2021, LGBTQ activists and other supporters planned to hold Pride Week on Rustaveli Avenue, however, before the start of the march, conservative groups occupied the area on Rustaveli Avenue. They physically assaulted media representatives and passers-by. The Ministry of Internal Affairs arrested 27 people on various charges. The case has 56 victims, including 47 journalists.
