GYLA: The footage show how the officers of the special task force are abusing an arrested person who is lying on the ground - we appeal to the Minister of Internal Affairs to immediately make a statement about the incident

We appeal to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Vakhtang Gomelauri, to immediately make a statement regarding the incident and prevent similar practices. Otherwise, it becomes clear that high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are conducting a tolerant policy, which is a direct incitement to such facts, - reads the statement of the Young Lawyers Association of Georgia.

With this statement, they respond to the circulated video footage, where it can be seen how the law enforcement officers are physically assaulting a protester.

They also appeal to the head of the Special Investigation Service, Koka Katsitadze, to conduct an effective investigation into the facts of the violence that occurred on the morning of May 13, 2024.

"The most serious footage is spreading, how the employees of the special task squad are abusing a detainee lying on the ground one after another, in order to retaliate, humiliate, and harm his dignity.

We address:

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Vakhtang Gomelauri, to immediately make a statement regarding the incident and prevent similar practices. Otherwise, it becomes clear that high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are conducting a tolerant policy, which is a direct incitement to such facts;

The head of the Special Investigation Service, Koka Katsitadze, to conduct an effective investigation into the facts of the violence that occurred in the morning of May 13, 2024, since the improper response of this agency also plays an encouraging role in the serious rights violations committed by law enforcement officers," reads the report.
