We should not simply condemn the actions of the ruling regime in Georgia, but give a very clear signal by imposing sanctions and starting with the leader, oligarch Ivanishvili. MEP Riho Teras announced this at the plenary session on Georgia in the European Parliament.
In his speech, he talked about the situation with democracy in Georgia and noted that the situation is getting worse.
According to the European parliamentarian, the statement of the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze about banning the opposition is not just an alarming sign - it is evidence of a dictatorship waiting for its chance.
"The situation with democracy in Georgia has been deteriorating for more than a decade. In the first years of Ivanishvili's government, he and his subordinates announced the continuation of the Euro-Atlantic path and the path of democratic reforms. We hosted a number of delegations of our Georgian colleagues from the opposition in this building, and they warned us from the beginning: "Please be careful, because Ivanishvili's regime is trying to seize power.
"With each election, we saw more and more violent incidents and pre-election events organized by people close to the regime, arresting opposition leaders and silencing the free media.
Prime Minister Kobakhidze's recent statement about banning the opposition if "Georgian Dream" wins the next elections is not just an alarming sign - it is evidence of a dictatorship waiting for its chance. We should not just condemn the actions of the ruling regime, but give a very clear signal by imposing sanctions on the people and organizations responsible for the downfall of democracy in Georgia. And we should start with the leader - oligarch Ivanishvili - in order to create an example", said Teras.
