Salome Samadashvili: Helsinki Commission statement lays ground for condemnation of Ivanishvili’s regime if they oppose the free will of the people

Salome Samadashvili, leader of the "Strong Georgia" coalition, stated that the US Helsinki Commission's report sets the stage for the condemnation of Bidzina Ivanishvili and his regime if they attempt to suppress the Georgian people's free will in the upcoming elections.

Samadashvili emphasized that the Helsinki Commission’s declaration highlights the democratic challenges Georgia faces under Ivanishvili’s rule, framing it as autocratic and aligned with Russian interests. She expressed confidence that Ivanishvili would eventually submit to the democratic process rather than oppose the will of the Georgian people.

"The statement of the Helsinki Commission creates a basis for the overthrow of Ivanishvili and his regime if they try to oppose the determination and expression of the free will of the Georgian people on October 26," Samadashvili declared.

She added, "I am sure that Ivanishvili has already understood that it is better for him to give a chance to the democratic process and he will obey the will of the Georgian people without hesitation."

Samadashvili also commented on the ongoing legal challenge by non-governmental organizations against the "Transparency of Foreign Influence" law, which is widely referred to as the "Russian law." She expressed confidence that the opposition's victory in the upcoming elections would render the court’s review unnecessary: "The first thing the newly elected parliament will do is cancel the 'Russian law.' Therefore, I am sure that the Strasbourg court will not have to discuss it."

For reference, the US Helsinki Commission's report emphasizes that the Georgian people deserve a government that respects their right to democratically elect their leaders, warning that the current government's authoritarian trajectory endangers Georgia's democratic future.
