Pawel Herczynski: There are no secrets and there are no shortcuts, the next government of Georgia must reverse the course, re-commit to democratic principles and values, if the country wants to get closer to the European Union

The next government of Georgia must reverse the course, become committed to democratic principles and values again, if the country wants to be closer to the European Union, - said Pawel Herchinsky, the ambassador of the European Union to Georgia.

"What will happen next? The future of EU-Georgia relations is now in the hands of Georgian leaders. Now I invite officials to read the [European Commission] enlargement report very, very carefully. It offers a clear path to re-engagement and a road map to Georgia's eventual EU membership, but its implementation requires genuine political will, serious reforms and a renewed commitment to our non-negotiable values and the principles on which the EU is built.

The enlargement process is a merit-based process, and only if Georgia implements reforms will it move forward on the EU path. There are no secrets and there are no shortcuts, the next government of Georgia must reverse course, re-commit to democratic principles and values, if it wants to bring the country closer to the European Union. This should start with full transparency about the election process.

The EU door remains open for Georgia. I sincerely hope that the Georgian officials will respect the aspirations of the Georgian people, who have always supported Georgia's European path. Please don't lose hope," said Herchinsky.
