Public Defender: the police use violent methods against citizens for the purpose of punishment - intentional, severe violence for the purpose of punishment is an act of torture

The Public Defender and his representatives have been meeting the arrested and injured citizens at the rally for the fifth consecutive day, most of whom point to the harshest treatment by the police. The Office of the Public Defender disseminates information about this.

As reported, the police use violent methods against citizens for the purpose of punishment, and intentional, severe violence for the purpose of punishment is an act of torture.

"Severe injuries, in most cases, have been received in the area of the face, eyes and head, which practically excludes even the possibility that the police used the necessary, proportional force against them every time. The location, character, and degree of the injuries create a credible impression that the police use violent methods against citizens to punish them.

Intentional, severe violence for the purpose of punishment constitutes an act of torture.

This time we would like to provide the public with additional information about the persons arrested at the rallies. So far, the apparatus has visited a total of 201 people, including a 21-year-old boy in Ingoroqva University Clinic, whose serious health condition is being actively spread in the media.

After the information spread in the previous days, on December 1-3, the trustees additionally visited 75 people placed in the temporary detention centers of Tbilisi, Baghdati, Gori and Zestafoni, as well as in clinics, of which 56 people indicated improper treatment by the members of the special purpose squad (21 of them did not want to respond) ). 44 of those arrested had various injuries.

Unfortunately, the information provided regarding the circumstances of the arrest does not differ from the practice observed in previous days. It is worth noting that in recent days, a number of detainees indicate the confiscation of personal belongings after arrest.

The Office of the Public Defender permanently provides the special investigation service with the information received from the citizens and disseminated by the media about the facts of possible improper treatment for the purpose of further legal response. The apparatus will also implement an appropriate response to the confiscation of personal belongings and clothes from detained citizens.

The representatives of the Public Defender continue their visits and we will provide additional information to the public.

The Public Defender calls on the Minister of Internal Affairs to publicly condemn each and every act of violence by the police and to ensure that effective measures are taken to prevent any unlawful actions by the police," the information reads.
