The actions of the ruling party, including the suspension of EU accession negotiations and the violent suppression of peaceful protests, are a direct violation of the Georgian constitution and fundamental human rights, current and former female leaders of the world state in a joint letter in support of the Georgian people and the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili.
"We, the signatory women leaders, express our solidarity with the Georgian people and President Salome Zurabishvili at this critical moment in the history of Georgia. "The recent events in Tbilisi, where more than 200,000 citizens took to the streets to protest the suspension of EU accession negotiations by the ruling party linked to Russia, highlight the deep commitment of the Georgian people to the European future and the democratic course," the statement said.
The women leaders point out that the ruling party's actions, including the suspension of EU accession negotiations and the violent suppression of peaceful protests, are a direct violation of the Georgian constitution and fundamental human rights.
"Despite constant attacks and harassment from the government, President Zurabishvili showed firm courage and leadership in condemning the government's anti-democratic measures. "He remains the only legitimate leader in the country where the current government came to power through dubious elections," the leaders said.
They call on the international community to take decisive measures.
"Georgia is not an isolated case: it is a critical battleground in the global struggle between authoritarianism and democracy. As women leaders, we call on the international community to take decisive measures to protect Georgia's democracy and its people and the steadfast courage of the president," the statement said.
